Nadiya Sussmilch is the soul and inspiration for this challenge. Sadly Nadiya passed away at just 11 years of age after a 7 year battle with cancer.
Upon hearing this a group of Aussie
blokes realised there is still a battle to be fought. That battle is of kids, literally, fighting
for their lives, after being diagnosed with cancer.
These blokes and adventurers were so moved
that they decided that they too would like to assist in that battle for our
children.
As it has never been done before, The group of
10 Aussie blokes decided a difficult challenge would be to
ride "Postie Bikes” (CT 110) from Wiluna (WA)
to Darwin (NT), (3000km)
via the Canning Stock
Route (1781km), the longest
and arguably the toughest stock route in
the world. So they hatched
a plan, formed a charity, got together some friends and received a
commitment to broadcast a documentary of Nadiya’s Challenge, with the aim of
raising money and awareness to support kids with cancer.
The team recognises
the major challenges
ahead – they will be faced with blistering heat, freezing nights, breakdowns, getting bogged, sunburn, heatstroke, lack of outside
communication, scorpions and snakes. While the team will be funding most of the trip
themselves, it was considered that this was a
great opportunity to raise much-needed funds
and awareness for children with cancer.
In all there will be four
Postie bikes, support vehicles, 10
blokes, a spirit of adventure and a "can do” attitude (which was Nadiya’s motto).
They aim to tackle this adventure in August 2011.
Paul and Pania Sussmilch (Nadiya’s parents) are a major inspiration
for the expedition and share for the documentary Nadiya’s heartbreaking story.
We have
conducted an interview with one of Australia’s leading
cancer researchers, Dr Elizabeth Williams, PhD, Senior Scientist and Research Fellow
Group Leader, Cancer Mestasis Group Centre for Cancer Research, Monash
Institute of Medical Research.
The bulk of
the project’s equipment being sourced ‘in-kind’. All money donated to Nadiya’s Challenge
will be forwarded to Challenge
– Supporting Kids with Cancer.
On The Water Charity Trust has been set up with a spirit of adventure in mind to raise money and awareness for various charities, organisations and individuals in need as determined by the committee.
Donations to On the Water Charity Trust (ABN 77 311 524 626), which is a DGR status (Deductable Gift Recipient), are tax deductible with administration being run in partnership with Bendigo Bank.
Funding is sought financially for Nadiya’s Challenge, with the bulk of the project’s equipment being sourced ‘in-kind’. The money raised from Nadiya’s Challenge will be forwarded to Challenge – Supporting Kids with Cancer. As there can never be enough support, the team is actively sourcing sponsors and supporters for On The Water Charity Trust to make this a great success.
